one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Back to school never felt so Good!!!

Today the kids go back to school! Whoo-hoo!!! After being with them for two and a half weeks, 24/7, with no structure, I realize that the reason we have school is not to educate children, but to keep parents from killing themselves, or from doing harm to their offspring. Now I know some of you are aghast because I am a teacher, but I promise you I have never wanted to harm anyone else's children. Several parents can vouch for me. Really.

In defense of my children, they are very wonderful and immensely entertaining and sweet. I also think they are pretty smart, but I'm not sure exactly how smart they are because they can't figure out how to use a tissue when they have huge globs of snot running down their noses. Now, now, don't get upset. Really, I am kidding. If you know me, you know my sense of humor. If you don't, please do not report me to Child Protective Services.

I love my children. I actually took this year off to be with them full-time and to help my 14 year-old stepson transition to this being his primary residence. I think maybe part of my irritability is due to the fact I've been catapulted into raising an adolescent without the proper preparation. That, and, when I got home from the dentist yesterday the back room looked like it had been host to the World Series of Armageddon. The floor was covered with debris, the boys were each wearing 5 pairs of underwear (don't ask), and Baby HaHa was in the toy chest!

So, on to today's outfit. I opted for a festive shirt and basic pants. Along with my gold roman-ish sandals. The shirt was a somewhat recent find at Goodwill and it has been my go-to shirt ever since. I am sad I will not be able to wear it as often. The pants are also from Goodwill and were acquired when I worked in admissions and had to look professional.

This was the first day I had to take my own picture and it did not go smoothly. Along with the technical difficulties, Baby HaHa was climbing up every unstable object she could find (my aunt calls her Ms. Everest). At one point, when I was fidgeting with the tripod, she grabbed the coffee pot I left on the counter. It was not hot, but it is glass. Anyway, these pictures are not great, but I had to throw in the towel eventually!

P.S. I am an advocate of education and I LOVED school up until university!

  3. Hi S--
Good to see you here! I love the outfit, and I agree that school was invented to keep parents sane. Summer camp, too.
