one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Out of the Closet...

Into the drawers! I finally went through my dresser after putting it off for a long time. I feared the backlash from folks who already think I have a lot of clothes. I guess I do have a lot of clothes, and I've been collecting them a long time. I also have gotten rid of a ton of clothes through the years, which means that in my lifetime I have cycled through more fabric than I care to imagine. I am pretty good about getting rid of things, but there are some items I've been holding on to forever. Or at least for 20 years.

So the drawers. I have 12 t-shirts, three of which have NOT been altered, 11 tank tops, 6 wife beaters that were my pregnancy staple, 3 nearly identical black racer back exercise tanks, 5 camisoles, and 4 tube tops?! Why I still have them, I don't know, but I do wear them under things sometimes. I have 10 knit shirts, and 17 shirts of a various nature. I also have 2 vintage night gowns and 6 pair of jeans. I would say at least half of these things in my dresser were given to me. I have often pondered, what my wardrobe would be like if I did not have such stylish friends. I was also amused that none of the jeans fit quite right. I haven't bought a new pair of jeans off the rack in about 9 years. Having had 3 pregnancies in 5 years, my weight has been all over the place, and I have been hesitant to invest in a stellar pair of jeans until I have maintained one weight for at least a year. We'll see what happens after Hollis stops nursing. I guess I have to wait until next year anyway! Oh, I also found Richard's dreadlocks in my dresser. I keep them there as a reminder of how he did the old bait and switch to get me!

Outfit:

Shirt: I got this at Goodwill to wear when I was "hiding" my pregnancy with Hollis. It is from Lux. I love the crazy print.

Sweater: This was given to me by my cousin.

Jacket: Goodwill. This was a great find. I love the tailoring and neckline. Phillip Courtney. I threw the jacket on because I plan to wear it tonight when I go to see Pee Wee's Playhouse! Come back later if you want to see my homage to Ms. Yvonne!

Jeans: From cousin. Gap.
