one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Shoes Update

After I returned from the dentist, I got a call from a friend I went to high school with. Our children go to school together so we had some winter break chat and catch-up. She told me that I had a lot of shoes. "REALLY?!", I asked incredulously. I truly believed I didn't have that many shoes. I guess I've been reading too many Imelda Marcos biographies and that I've watched one too many Sex and the City episodes. Also, I don't wear most of my shoes, some were given to me, and, if I take out the three pair over $50, they would still not add up to the cost of one pair of Jimmy Choos. Of course, after typing the previous sentence, I realize this is the logic of a crazy person. I mean, I bought red patent leather platforms because they fit and they were cute and 5 bucks. But, here's the thing, I would never go out to a restaurant and say "I'll have the cheapest thing on the menu, as long as it's okay." Food for thought for me.

Back to my friend. She said that she owns six pairs of shoes. A serious athletic shoe that she replaces yearly, a pair of flip-flops, pink sneakers, boots, heels and one other shoe that I forget. I imagine it would be a pair of flats. After thinking about her list I thought it was pretty reasonable. But then again, I guess fashion and reason don't always go hand in hand, or foot in shoe!

  1. I think I have about the same amount of shoes as you and you were more of your then I do. I buy shoes that I'll never wear all the time cause they're cute and cheap. I guess this is a good lesson. I like the person who only has 6 very practical pairs each for a very specific reason. I shall have to mull this over. I don't think I'd want to go down to 6 pairs but perhaps 10.

  2. Yes, but are you going to get rid of your shoes just because you don't wear them often? You might wear them one day...

  3. I'm a firm believer that one cannot have too many shoes, coats or handbags. You may call my attitude "American Excess" or what have you but your shoe collection looks normal.

Shoes help put the final touch on an array of outfits so to each his own. I don't wag my finger at someone who chooses to own 6 pair or 60+...some people collect shoes like they collect cars but if you're not using them, than that's another issue.

Your collection looks pretty normal/standard to me...and they're damn cute! :)

  4. Thank you! I feel much better now. I was starting to have shoe guilt!

  5. I just counted all of my shoes, and including slippers, flip-flops, hiking boots, rain boots and regular shoes, I have 26 pairs.

The thing about shoes is that you never outgrow them, and good pairs can be re-soled and last forever. Some of my shoes are over 10 years old. So it's totally reasonable that you have a lot of shoes.

Phil, on the other hand, had two pairs of shoes when we started going out. He's now up to six pairs, but only because I bought him four!!!
