one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

The Sub!

Got called at 6 a.m. to work in science and 5th grade. I love being a substitute because you get to see different styles of teaching, lesson plans, and classroom management. I also enjoy seeing where the children are in each grade, and what they are capable of. Fun, fun, fun!

In science I was lucky because there were three baby ducks and I got to play with them! They were so adorable and funny. They were also are quite stinky for such little beings. I guess I could say the same for my HaHa Bear!

After being at the zoo yesterday,  I really don't have to go back to another zoo ever. I had not been to the Los Angeles Zoo in probably over 25 years, but we had passes, so I thought I'd take the kids on their day off. I explained to them that I really don't care for animals in captivity, but I tried to be a good sport. I really hated seeing the animals in their tiny "habitats". It  just seems so unnatural. The best part about the zoo was watching Hollis' face when she saw each animal. She looked astonished and delighted as each new creature appeared before her.  I also got to see Charlie's Virgo tendencies come to life before my eyes. He was fixated on the map and following it to "The Smarty Pants" (chimps) and "The Orangutan-gos" (Orangutans). I just wanted to walk and see what we happened upon. We went head to head the whole time, but I admire Charlie's fervor and determination! I survived the zoo alone with the three wildest creatures in L.A.!!!

Outfit:

Print Shirt: I got this at some crazy store in the Bronx when I was staying with my good friends. It's label says: Pink Collection!

Brown shirt underneath: Clothing swap. Sweet Pea.

Jeans: From Cousin. Gap.

White Sweater: Salvation Army. Express.

Shoes: American Eagle.

  1. Go Virgo! Go Virgo! Get anal!

I love your kids and the fact that you hate the zoo. It's a screwed up thing because while I believe that by seeing those animals people have more of a desire to save them I don't know why those particular animals that just happened to get caught or bred in captivity have to suffer for the good of the free ones.

  3. the LA zoo is the saddest zoo ever. see the bear in a pool. see the hippo in a pool. see the alligator in a pool. i never knew camels could be so depressed -- the one we saw i swear looked like he was hoping for a dose of prozac in his next meal.

  4. LA Zoo is almost as bad as SF Zoo. Same deal but animals used to heat in the rain and the fog. They have Koalas in a room with no Eucalyptus Trees. That was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. It was crawling around on the floor. The San Diego Wild Animal Park seems the most humane. I would recommend it though it's been years. Maybe it's just as sad.

  5. Oh, you women were brought up so well. You can't imagine how much I agree and how dumb and ignorant I was when I was your age. ThankGod you are who you are. I love you both and am proud to be your mom and "painless" mom.
