one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Happy Anniversary!

April 1st! One of my very favorite days. In the words of Mark Twain, "This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other three hundred and sixty-four." I, for one, plead guilty to being foolish much of the time. Only a fool would blog about their wardrobe!

My New Yorkers left today. I was thinking about Emily and I realized that she was a very pivotal role model in my life. I met her when I was a student in New York. It was not the happiest time of my life, and ALL of my family was on the west coast. I was a little homesick, a LOT confused, and Emily was a young mom with her stuff together. We met at an all-class east coast high school reunion. She was five years older than me, almost to the day (our birthdays are two days apart), and she had a baby. As you know from my Baby Love post, I love babies. Emily had her very adorable baby with her the night we met, and that first encounter led into an occasional baby sitting gig. That occasional gig led into a regular weekly gig, which led into a part-time gig, which led into a full-time gig, and eventually led back into a part-time fun-filled gig.

Being around a stable and happy couple was medicine for me. Spending time with the cutest baby in the world was also restorative. Everything the city took out of me, I got back in giggles and hugs, and lovely moments. Being around their family made the city bearable and much more enjoyable than it had been before, and, I learned a lot. I also laughed all the time with them, and danced, and ate, and just really had a great time. Over the years, they grew from three to five, and they are all incredible people!

Emily was also the reason I became interested in natural childbirth. She became a childbirth and parenting educator after she had three very different birthing experiences (all natural). Her final baby was delivered on her own at home (the midwives got stuck on the subway!) After hearing her home birth story I knew I wanted to have my babies at home as well. For that, and for so many other nuggets of parental wisdom, I cannot thank Emily enough! And Eric too, of course! They Rock!

Outfit:

Tie: From dress, from friend. Ella Moss.

Shirt: From Cousin. Forever 21.

Blue halter dress: From street fair in New York a million years ago. I started with the halter up, but then took it down for easier nursing.

Tights: Black Hue tights under, hand-dyed blue-grey fishnets.

Shoes: Friend hand me down. Nine West. I love T-Straps!

I've included a picture of Emily, because she is a layering master! I got her as she was rushing out the door to meet a friend. I wish you could see the prints of the fabric better. Today was my 100th post, by the way. Proving once again what a fool I am.

  1. Layna: Great outfit--especially love the tights and the choice of shoes. Who else would have thought of layering tights?

    Love,
