one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Attack of the Silverfish!

When I was choosing my outfit for the day, I opened my top drawer to fish out some undergarments and what did I see scurry about, but a silverfish?! I was mortified and disgusted and I proceeded to empty out every drawer in my dresser, and search meticulously through everything. I pulled the drawers out, vacuumed every crevice, and took out some non-clothing items that may have lured the silverfish there. One of them being a set of wrapped Goody hairbands circa 1975. The wrapping is crumbling and I don't know why I've kept them around for so long. I guess I was saving them for HaHa?... I don't know...

Actually, I do know. I loved the novelty of having "new" things from 35 years ago. I also have a bunch of Spice Girls lollipops made by Chupa Chups that I keep for the same reason. They are only about 13 years old, however. Maybe it is time to let them go...

After my encounter with the scaly visitor I called Richard and told him that we had to do something! The first thing was getting our paper problem under control. Silverfish like paper. Charlie is probably responsible for a third of the world's paper usage, and his papers are everywhere. We also have boxes of other people's paper we've been harboring. Richard also reminded me that we have books. He asked if I want to get rid of all of our books, too. That's just like Richard. All I want is a house where I never have to see a silverfish again!

Outfit:

It was Open House at Charlie's school, so I wanted to dress up a bit. I instantly reached for my re-styled denim dress, but feeling that my legs were not prepared to be shown to the world, I added this beautiful skirt as a bottom layer.

Tank: This was a hand me down from Pollyanna. Old Navy.

Denim Dress: This was a Goodwill find. It had two ruffles, but I cut one of them off. I also cut off the big puffy sleeves to reveal these little black wings. I, of course, am wearing it backwards, for nursing.

Skirt: From Cousin. Ralph Lauren.

Shoes: Mossimo.

  1. Your dress is great. It is denim dressed up in an elegant, yet fun way. It reminds me of Ralph Lauren's spring runway show. (Look it up!) Why do I like ruffles so much? Must be a little girl thing I hang on to, like your new packages!

  4. Hi Layna: Two things: First I love the restyled denim, and agree with Lauris on the fact that is does look like a couple of pieces from Ralph Lauren's Spring Collection. So cute. Second, you can solve your silverfish problem with cedar blocks. You can buy cedar blocks at Bed, Bath and Beyond maybe even at Home Depot. The cedar keeps silverfish, moths and whole bunches of other little crawlie things from gathering and reproducing; and everything will smell good.

  5. Layna: As a follow-up to my previous post please excuse the misspelled word on the second line (is should be it), and I just wanted you to know that I ordered some cedar blocks from Bed, Bath and Beyond for you just to get you started. They should be there in a few days.
