one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Fashion or Style?

My post inspiration today comes from The Sartorialist. I have been meaning to write about this particular post of his, because I think it pretty much expresses how I feel about fashion. He asks, "What is more important, fashion or style?" He follows up by saying that at the few fashion shows he attended he had seen "some very "fashionable" young ladies. But, they always come up short when compared to the young ladies doing their own thing". I tend to agree with him. Of course fashion inspires style, but there is nothing better than seeing someone marching to the beat of their own style drum. There is also nothing worse than seeing someone dressed to the nines in the latest and greatest fashion trend only to find that they look-a-like-a idiot.

Case in point: Two very stylish and fashionable ladies, Natalie Portman and Cat Deeley, sport a dress from the highly lauded Lanvin. However, the dress, as high fashion as fashion can be, looks terrible on both of them. It should have been left on the runway. I also feel ill when I see skinny jeans or bubble skirts. Very few people look good in these items, and they should be avoided. People should also be mindful of what looks good on their particular frame, and what they feel good in. Wearing something you feel good in makes all the difference.

Unless, of course, it's a bubble skirt...

When I was in New York I had a little fantasy that I would run into Scott Speedman, a.k.a The Sartorialist,  and we would have coffee and a chat. Alas, I did not. Maybe one day. Perhaps he'll be roaming the streets of L.A. soon. Scott, I'm ready for a cup o' joe when you are!

Outfit:

Green shirt: Got this in NYC at least 15 years ago. I don't remember where.

Vest: Goodwill. Urchin.

Pants: Forever 21.

Shoes: Fit Flops.

  1. I have to say, I don't think that Lanvin dress should have even made it to the runway. Please. It looks like something a preschooler would make while playing dress-up. In fact, I bet if you gave three feet of coral tulle to HaHa she could make something even better. Dresses like that are why I have very little interest in fashion - at least when it comes to modern work. But style, as you say is different. I could use a style.
P.S. I love how HaHa is imitating you in that one pic. Too cute.

  2. I know, that's why I put it in there! She is a funny one. And yes, I might help her start a collection!
