one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

A Fall Day!

After the bizarre weather we've had these past few weeks, it was nice to have an actual fall day! However, it was chilly, and I spent almost the entire day wearing my jacket and scarf. I had three meetings today, which is uncommon, but made for an interesting day.

It also made for a long day, and when I finally left, I was tired. The boys and girl were also spent, and our last hours together before bed time were harried and very exhausting.

I am hoping we all get some good shut-eye tonight.

Outfit:

Brown shirt: Hand me down from friend. Mossimo.

Knit vest: I got this many years ago at a store on Jay Street in NYC. Everything in it was knit and very cool!

Jeans: Goodwill. Gap.

Shoes: Wanted.

Breakdown!

So, after a 3:00 a.m. bedtime, I woke up at 8 in order to get to Leo's school where I had to volunteer this morning (see haggard face left). I actually got a 6:40 a.m. call requesting that I sub, but I reluctantly had to pass because of my obligation to help breakdown The Wonder of Learning exhibit. It closed on Saturday and is making it's way to Chicacgo!

Now, you would think that knowing about my duties today would have inspired me to come up with a cute and functional outfit last night, but NO! I lamed out and threw on my trusty kick around jeans and a shirt that my cousin gave me that I have never worn before. This is exactly what I should NOT be wearing, but I did say that at least 30 of my outfits were going to stink and this is certainly one of them. At the same time, I was doing manual labor, so getting dressed up would have been silly, right?

Last night when I was up working on my not sleeping, which I am really good at, I realized that I am a second generation Los Angelino. That makes my kids third generation. Richard was born here too. Born in the land of perpetual sun and traffic. Lucky we!

By the way, as I write this Haha is climbing all over me. She has been awake since 9:00 a.m. and has only slept 40 minutes all day. She's still awake as I post this at 10:30 p.m. I took her with me to meet my amazing friend Amy because I thought she would fall asleep in the car. She didn't, and she got very punchy toward the end. Now she is walking around the dining room holding a paper saying "Kitty, kitty, kitty". Also, I had a request to include more photos of Haha bear, so I hope I made my patrons happy!

Outfit:

Polka dot tie shirt: From cousin. Forever 21.

Undershirt: Clothing swap. Old Navy.

Jeans: From cousin. Gap.

Shoes: I started with my Wanted sneakers, then changed into my American Eagle shoes that Ayiko gave to me.

Trails!

We were invited to spend the morning in Griffith Park in the area around The Trails cafe. I had no luck convincing the boys that they would love the scenery and food at The Trails, so I went alone with Hollis. The boys wanted to stay home and play with Legos. Since they rush hither and thither all week, I decided not to force them out of the house, even though I wanted to. I really wanted to.

The scenery at Griffith Park is stunning, and it was also quite a scene. The hipsters were out and in full force. There was a TV actress, a skinny jean wearing femme-boy, bikers, middle-age rockers with their fashionable kids in tow, neo- bohemians, nature enthusiasts, and dogs. I love L.A.!

I forgot to post another poll, but I will add it tomorrow. Although only twelve people responded, it was clear that I was the only person with more than 60 shirts. Oh well, it's still less than Oprah, I'm sure!

Outfit:

Because I spent so much time trying to convince the little dudes to come with me, I had to rush to get dressed. I decided to wear jeans again, and I threw on a shirt I have worn before, but backwards. I didn't think about it too much, but when I got home I started to worry that some people might not think it is a different outfit. It is a little lame, but I have a different sweater underneath, different shoes, and I think the look is pretty different. If you disagree, you can let me know!

Shirt: I got this at a warehouse sale. I took the label off, so I can't say who made it. Seen in: Hey Thursday! I belted it with a scarf my friend gave me long ago.

Sweater: From cousin.

Jeans: From cousin. Gap.

Shoes: Wanted.

37!

Okay. First things first. I failed to mention in my post yesterday that Richard was also an integral part of the TWO surprise party planning. I thought that he helped plan the parties, but I was in a rush and not completely sure, so I just gave credit to Pollyanna. Sorry Richard! You're the best!

As I reach this age where I am closer to 40 than 30, I realize, emphatically, that mother nature, or God or the universe definitely has a sense of humor. When you are a young woman in your late teens and early 20's, you are at your physical peak. Your skin is smooth, your breasts are pert, you can stay up all night and still get up the next day to go to work, you can eat what you want, more or less, you don't think so much about your future, you're idealistic, and life is fresh. However, even with all of this physical power and fearlessness, I felt so horrible about myself most of the time. I was confused and sad and awkward and imbalanced. It was only at the end of my 20's that I started to feel good most of the time. By 30 I was feeling great, and now I feel super duper!

That said, things are bagging and sagging and wrinkling and crinkling, and I feel like I am really starting to look my age... and feel it! After the kickboxing class I took last week, my whole body was sore. That didn't happen in my 20's. Not sleeping. I'm starting to learn it doesn't work. I spend the next day feeling awful and drinking too much coffee. I have many days like that. Anyway, before I ride off on my bike  with Richard, to celebrate my birthday by watching the Clippers, I must say thank you to all for the birthday wishes, and for supporting me with this blog! I am very flattered and honored that people take the time to look at my crazy outfits! And, dinner at Bottega Louie was wonderful! I highly recommend it, and the company was perfection!

Outfit:

I started the day with a bike ride and brunch. I decided to stay in one outfit all day for ease, although I added the beautiful antique necklace my mother gave me today, and fancy shoes!

Shirt: This is the shirt that goes with the belt I wore yesterday. My cousin gave it to me. It is French Connection.

Jeans: These are also from my cousin. Gap.

Brown shirt: Goodwill. Mossimo.

Sweater: From friend. H&M.

Vest: Eastern Mountain Sports. Very old.

Sneakers: Wanted.

Shoes: Old Navy.

Pizza Pajama Night!

I had to rush out of the house this morning to buy supplies for the boy's preschools' annual Pizza Pajama Night. I got a little irritated picking out an outfit today because it's a little hard to psych yourself into getting dressed up when you know that all you are doing the whole day is chauffeuring around people under the age of 7. I'm sure this is why there are so many "Mom Makeover" shows. What's the point of looking nice if you're going to get stained, and smelly, and see no one other than your offspring?

I just got home at 8:47 and I left the house at 10:00 a.m.! Hollis was a total trooper driving all over town. Lucky for me, it didn't start to pour until after I got the boys!

I think it's hard to tell that the shirt and pants I'm wearing are a chocolate brown.

Shirt: I Heart Guts.

Sweater: From cousin. Mossimo.

Pants: From cousin. Gap.

Jacket: From cousin. Mossimo.

Shoes: Wanted.
