one closet, one year!

I was getting dressed for a friend's birthday party and I didn't know what I was going to put on my body. I looked in my closet and it seemed empty, unpromising. I've had these moments before; everything was old, ill-fitting, or blah. I thought to myself, "Ugh! I have NOTHING to wear!" Then I began rifling through my closet and saw a forgotten shirt I loved and many more, and I realized I was crazy. I had plenty to wear, and plenty to choose from. My closet was FULL of treasures! At that moment I decided I would take a year to explore my closet and to add NOTHING new to my wardrobe.

I would create a NEW outfit for each day in order to maximize my wardrobe and shake up my style.

Basically, I would try to "snap out" of my fashion rut, and appreciate what I have.

It was my New Years' project:
One Closet, One Year.

Giving Thanks!

I am thankful for all of the gifts in my life. The good times, the bad times and everything in between.

I am thankful for my amazing family and awesome friends.

I am thankful for the wonderful people I work with. The adults and the children.

I am thankful for the delicious meal prepared for us by the extraordinary and kind chef Palver.

I am thankful that today I got to "unplug" and read magazines, listen to the radio and hang at home. I kept my cell phone off and tucked away my computer. I did laundry, I baked, and I barely ate anything, much like yesterday, so I could stuff myself with all the Thanksgiving foods I love!

This turned out to be a mistake. I think that not eating much in two days made my stomach slightly smaller, so I got full really fast. And, this is the first Thanksgiving I can remember ever, that I did NOT eat desert!!! Me not eating desert is a big deal. I'm not really sure why I didn't. I guess I was too full.

I will have some pumpkin pie tomorrow, though. Actually, pumpkin-sweet-potato-pie! Yummy!

Oh, I am  also thankful for you kind souls who give my blog the time of day! Thank you all, so much! I hope you all had a wonderful and peaceful Thanksgiving!!!

Stage Fright!

Tomorrow I am doing something that I am quite nervous about: performing a musical theater piece I am not completely comfortable with in front of my whole school! Luckily it is a short piece so the torture will only last a few minutes. I wouldn't be doing it if not for the very talented and inspirational man I'm performing with. I guess as long as I remember my lines, I'll be okay.

Here's hoping!

When I picked HaHa up I noticed that she was wearing a super-cute outfit. I asked Richard if he picked it out, and he said that she's pretty much been picking out her outfits on her own for several weeks. He says it takes them a lot longer to get out of the house now.

Go figure. She's definitely a girl!

Anyway, since I am singing at the crack of dawn, I should get myself to bed!

Outfit:

When I got home and took my pictures I had yet another flash of "I've worn this before." And yet, I have not. However, it is a very Shelayna outfit, and I've definitely used this color palate before. I love me some pink and gray!

Shirt: Forever 21. I got this when I worked in admissions.

Sweater: Hand me down from cousin. Forever 21.

Skirt: Goodwill. Zara.

Slip: Thrift store.

Shoes: Mossimo.                                     The L.A. sky at dusk.

Shades of Gray!

I love gray. There is something about it that I find appealing. Dark gray. Heathered gray. Light gray. I even like gray days. Perhaps because they are so rare in these parts.

I grabbed the gray when I was getting dressed this morning. Mostly because I knew I hadn't worn these items together. I went to breakfast with my peeps, made my best friend almost miss her flight back to New York, and spent the rest of the day petering about the house, only stepping out to get some onions for a stew.

Speaking of gray, Richard sent me an interesting article about The Pill. The article states that The Pill has an effect on the brain, particularly the gray matter. How important or detrimental the effect is, is still up for debate. The research, it seems, is new and still emerging. I have always been suspect of putting hormones in my body. I did try the Nuva Ring for a spell after I had Charlie and Leo, and, I felt awful on it. Luckily, I never have to bother with it again! This new information only adds to my suspicion of hormonal birth control. That said, I do understand that some women feel fine on The Pill, and, it revolutionized the lives of women everywhere! History, I'm sure, would be very different without it.

Potlatch!

I asked Richard to edit and publish my post at 5 p.m. and he said he would, but when I checked my emails at 8:47 p.m., he hadn't done it, thus the VERY late post!

... I was out all day shepherding the children and making sure they got to do all the things they needed to. Charlie decided that he wants to be in a school show, so he had to get to school early. I thought I would have time to do my post while he was rehearsing, but Hollis came with us and she is not one to sit around while Mama is at the computer! I dropped Hollis off at Aunt Janine's so I could enjoy Charlie's First Grade Potlatch celebration without distractions.  It was wonderful to see Charlie take pride in his presentation and hard work. The first grade potlatch is the culmination of their study of the Pacific Northwest Kwakiutl Indians.

After the potlatch, I scurried off to retrieve Hollis, then we hurried off to pick up Leo.We got Leo, who decided that he wanted some juice, so we trolled the 3rd Street Promenade, seeing sights and killing time before we had to fetch Charlie. Why am I telling you all this? I don't know. Basically to describe that I was running around all day which left me in a race to get my pictures taken and post done!

Outfit:

Since I was in "Mommy-at-school-function" mode, I decided to dress up a bit. It was a grey morning  upon rising, and this inspired my color palate.

Grey Sweater Coat: Goodwill. Forever 21.

Blue Knit Tank: Thrift Store. Urchin.

Grey Skirt: Goodwill. Zara.

Blue Tights: Hue. These were actually nude and I dyed them blue, because I thought it would be cool. I was dying a bunch of clothes for the boys that had a lot of stains, but were okay otherwise.

Shoes: Predictions.

Pot Luck!

I stayed in bed as long as I possibly could. I have to thank Richard and my Aunt Janine. We are going to the final parent pot luck for Leo's class. One last time to mingle before we go our separate ways in June.
There will be Margaritas and tacos. What more could a girl want?

I am not writing a lot today. I am hoping the blog police don't report me. I waited until 5:30 to take my pictures, so the light was against me. I went back between flash and no flash, and the pictures were a little dicey.

Outfit:

Lace Empire waist shirt: Isaac Mizrahi for Target. I got it for 7 bucks!

Grey Pencil Skirt: Goodwill. Zara.

Sweater: Friend hand-me-down: H&M.

Shoes: Patricia Field for Payless. I was looking for shoes for the boys and I saw these. They were on sale for 12 smackeroos.

By the way, it just started to pour, so I may be heading to the shin-dig in my handy dandy rain boots!
